Simple Closet Refresh: Making Your Modest Wardrobe Work for You
Share
I love clothes. Shocker. But this year? Less is better. My closet isn’t a storage unit—it should be filled with pieces I actually wear and love. No more holding onto things “just in case.” (Except for that one Thread & Supply cardigan…she’s not going anywhere. 😂)
So, I did a closet clean-out and focused on building a wardrobe that works for me—not the other way around. Different seasons of life call for different approaches, and this year, that meant decluttering what didn’t serve me, relocating some (mainly sweatshirts…we all have our weaknesses), and making sure everything had a place. I'm so grateful for Inherit's Spring Collection, as it helps me make intentional choices that will last.
Step 1: Take Everything Out
A real refresh starts with a blank slate. Lay it all out where you can see it—yes, it’ll be a disaster zone, but trust the process. Full transparency? I took out everything from the floor and shelves but left my hanging clothes, going through them one by one.

Step 2: Sort Into Keep, Maybe, and Donate/Sell
- Keep: You love it, wear it often, and it fits your style.
- Maybe: You like it, but something feels off. Try it on and decide.
- Donate/Sell: If it doesn’t fit, isn’t comfortable, or hasn’t been worn in a year, it’s time to let it go.
Now, Let’s Build a Closet That Works:
- Only keep what you wear. If you haven’t reached for it in six months (and it’s not seasonal), it’s gotta go.
- Neutrals build the foundation. Black, white, denim, and earthy tones make outfit-building effortless. (My closet = a neutral lover’s dream thanks to elevated essentials.)
- Trendy pieces? Be intentional. If you actually wear them, great! If not, ask yourself if they deserve the space. (This one was hard—some summer dresses just didn’t make the cut.)
- If it’s uncomfortable, it’s out. No more keeping things that look great but feel awful. If you’re adjusting, tugging, or avoiding it—it’s a no. (Had to get real with myself here. 😂)
- Layering is a game-changer. A long sleeve tee, a structured blazer, or a simple dress can go so many ways.
- Quality > quantity. Five well-made pieces > 15 that fall apart after a season. (This mindset shift has made my closet clean-outs way easier over time.)
- Follow the “One In, One Out” rule. Buy something new? Let something go. (Okay, trying to follow this more…)
- Define your everyday style. What outfit makes you feel most like you? Build around that. (I realized I wear the same styles over and over—why fight it?!)
- Confidence is the best staple. The best outfits make you feel like yourself. If it doesn’t do that, it doesn’t belong.
- Oh, and maybe do a bit of dusting and floor washing in that closet!

Final Touch: Organize & Refresh
- Arrange by category (tops, bottoms, dresses, etc.), then by color. (It’s a little thing, but it makes me happy!)
- Matching hangers = instant closet glow-up. (I have all white hangers—some metal tops, some not. A work in progress, but we’re rolling with it.)
- Store out-of-season pieces elsewhere to keep things clutter-free. (Had to move most of my sweatshirts out…summer’s coming, after all!)
- Keep a donation bin in your closet for easy purging. (Just started this and WOW—why didn’t I do it sooner?!)
